Nancy  Harvey  Steorts

(Class  of  1955)

Nancy Harvey Steorts has had a distinguished career in business and trade, political service and academia. She is an international and national authority on consumer safety issues and standards. Nancy is widely recognized in business and government circles for her accomplishments.

President Ronald Reagan appointed Nancy Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1981. She was also named "One of the Best Public Servants in 1984" by the Gallagher report, and received the George P. Arents Medal for Excellence in Government. This was an honor conferred by her alma mater, Syracuse University, and is the highest award given to alumni.

She is a noted international lecturer and writer and has appeared on numerous television shows. Her book, Safety and You, was published in 1999. Nancy also serves on a variety of corporate and community boards. She plans on continuing to use her expertise to help consumers, industry and government recognize the important of safety to their overall quality of life.

"I am deeply grateful for the outstanding education I received at the Fayetteville-Manlius school system. Those early years laid the solid foundation for my life’s achievements," Nancy says. "F-M gave me the solid background, the knowledge and the sense of community to make a significant contribution to society throughout my life. This award is truly the highlight of my career as it comes from the institution who gave me the first opportunity to achieve, and for that I am most grateful."

Nancy currently lives in the Washington, D.C. area. Her son and daughter reside in Charlotte, North Carolina.
